Bendiciones.

Today is Thursday and, as they say, your body just knows it. It’s that day of the week when nostalgia finds a place in our routine, allowing us to travel through pixels. I’m delighted to accept the invitation from my friend @lanzjoseg to take part in his brilliant initiative [“TBT: A photo, a story”](https://peakd.com/hive -192096/@lanzjoseg/concurso-tbt-una-foto-una-historia-un-dia-de-esos-jueves-9-de-julio), because remembering isn’t just about reliving the past, but also about honouring the roots that keep us grounded, no matter how far we’ve flown.
The enduring appeal of merengue stands the test of time.
I look at the picture and, immediately, the air is filled with a sweet scent of vanilla and Italian meringue, the kind that sticks to your fingers and lingers in your memory. At the centre of the scene, Gilda, my niece, has that mischievous look that seems to defy the camera. It was probably around 2015. She must have been about ten years old, entering that stage where a little girl’s games begin to blend with the dreams of youth. Behind her, like invisible yet steadfast pillars, stand my brother Henry and my sister-in-law Amalia. He, in his blue checked shirt, and she, in a vibrant red, hold not only the focus of the photograph, but also the weight of a moment which, in the Venezuela of that time, was already beginning to be an act of resistance.
On the left, Hanley — Amalia’s sister — completes the family picture. There are other girls, whose names have been lost in the passage of time, but who at that moment were shouting and laughing with the same intensity. At the time, I was out of the country. Looking at this photo today is to feel that ‘twinge’ in the chest that only those who have been away can understand. I can hear, almost as if I were there, the opening lines of ‘Ay, qué noche tan preciosa…’. It is a song that, in Venezuela, is not just a birthday song; it is a hymn of unity. I hear the off-beat clapping, the shouts of ‘Viva!’ and the metallic clang of plastic plates clattering together.
Back in 2015, the crisis was already rearing its ugly head, but Venezuelan culture has one distinctive trait: it never lets the cake go missing from the table. Anything else might be missing, but a child’s birthday is sacred. In my homeland, we make do with what we’ve got; we find ingredients where there are none, and we bake that circular symbol of hope, covered in white icing, with love. That image reflects a powerful simplicity; there are no ostentatious luxuries, but there is a sense of presence, there is family, and there is that “upbeat” joy that characterises us. The photo tells us that, despite the economic gloom, the light of domestic celebration remains alight.
This piece is a tribute to those moments that seem insignificant but which, as the years go by, become treasures. Thank you to Gilda for opening this window onto the past and allowing me, even if only for a few minutes, to sit at that imaginary table and share a slice of cake with my loved ones.
Finally, I’d like to say a few words to all of us who come together every week around these initiatives centred on memories and experiences. Let’s keep going, friends. Let’s continue to support one another, share our thoughts and build community through our stories. Even though the value of the token may fluctuate and the charts may sometimes dip, the value of our memories and mutual support is an asset that never loses its worth. See you at the next memory! Blessings.
If you want to take part, I think you’re still in time – you’ve got until 11.59 pm TODAY, THURSDAY, so hurry up and remember to follow the rules.
