I can sense that melancholy, that emptiness within humanity, all too clearly. It is a feeling of being ‘disconnected whilst connected’: we are surrounded by digital noise, yet the silence of the human soul grows ever heavier, perhaps even unbearable. In Canadian culture, shaped by two influences—British and French—there is a long tradition of watching the grey rain and the tarmac whilst enjoying the warmth of a cup of tea, coffee or an honest conversation.
In these verses, using a style that blends the English lyrical tradition (in the vein of Wordsworth or Keats) with a stark observation of modernity, they convey a message to you who are isolated, glued to the screen... Alone in your room.
The Hearth Still Beats (Below the Glass)
The wireless hums a jagged, hollow tune,
Of chemically-spun highs and paper-moons.
Where once the sonnet danced in London’s mist,
Now only static and the clenched, cold fist
Of manufactured rage and hollow lust,
Turning our ancient diamonds into dust.
We sit in rows, like gargoyles carved in light,
Our faces blanched by screens of sterile white.
A billion "friends" within a backlit cage,
Yet no one knows the person on the page.
We’ve traded in the kettle’s warm refrain
For scrolling ghosts that shield us from the rain.
But look—between the cracks of grey-slate sky,
A dandelion dares to catch the eye.
The neighbor’s hand, though hesitant and slow,
Still holds a spark the pixels cannot know.
For poetry is not a dying art,
It is the rhythm of a waking heart.
Let down the glass. Let silver shadows fall.
There is a music louder than it all:
The quiet grace of helping where we can,
The simple, sacred "How are you?" of man.
The world is cold, but love’s a stubborn flame,
And poetry... is just its secret name.
Poetry is not dead, my friends. As long as anyone feels that ‘something is missing’, poetry will live on, seeking to be expressed.
I would like to invite my poet friend @silher to read his contribution, if time allows. Also, thanks to
