I Don't Know

Everything in a person requires self-expression. Especially vanity. We strive to appear competent, knowledgeable, and confident. We come up with answers on the fly, rush to insert our comments, and pretend to be experts in all areas of life, both our own and others'.

“But is it not the most shameful ignorance to imagine that you know what you do not know?” (Plato)

Is it possible to be absolutely sure of anything in this ever-changing world?

Are we capable of accepting new ideas, listening to other people's opinions, admitting our mistakes, and changing our established beliefs?

How often do we say, “I don't know”?

Our false confidence is worse than honest ignorance, because it leaves no room for growth. Only by admitting, “I don't know,” do we become open to learning.

True self-expression is not proving that you are right, but searching for the truth. And you cannot find the truth without ignorance and doubt.
