Recently, many experts, including the world’s richest person Elon Musk expressed concern about the decline in India’s population growth rate, even though the official census has not yet been completed. If you listen to their concerns, it feels as if out of India’s 1.5 billion people, only 100 million are left and the rest have suddenly disappeared.

These so‑called experts and economists claim that India’s population growth rate has fallen below the replacement level, and because of this, India will have a very large population of elderly people in the future. They say the number of young working people will shrink and the country’s economic progress will stop.

But the real concern of capitalists and their loyal mouthpieces is not whether people’s lives will become better or worse. They are concerned about the economic growth alone. India’s population is already extremely high. Even if the population falls from 1.5 billion to 1 billion in the next 100 years, it will still be very large. There was a time when India had only around 10 million people, yet the country was economically prosperous. From the Maurya and Gupta periods to the Mughal era, India was among the richest nations in the world despite having a much smaller population than it has today. So population growth has nothing to do with economic progress.

Their real worry is this: if India’s population decreases, where will the world get cheap labour from? They want cheap guards, servants, maids and workers (and even rag pickers and sex slaves) who may live helpless lives in city slums, barely surviving, but still working for them at low wages.

If a person who raises chickens or goats expresses concern that fewer chicks or kids are being born, don’t assume he is worried about preserving their lineage. Just understand that he is worried about his profits. Isn’t this true that the more eggs the chickens lay, the more kids the goats, sheep or pigs produce, the more profit the owner makes?

So whether it is a so called religious leader or any so‑called expert, ordinary people should not fall into their trap. You must think about your own future and your children’s future. Your children are not born to live or die for the society. Keep this in your mind that you have a right over your life and they wish to control it.
