Beyond the Rift: Soccer as a Refuge After the Worst Earthquake of My Life and the Thrilling Senegal vs. Belgium Match (English/Spanish)
There are days when your life changes in the blink of an eye, reminding you how small and unpredictable we are in the face of nature’s power. On June 24, 2026, at 6:04 p.m., I experienced the most violent and terrifying 41 seconds of my life. A double earthquake measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale shook my country, Venezuela, leaving a heartbreaking trail of human loss, collapsed structures, and stories that break the soul.
That afternoon, I was sitting at my desk, focused on my laptop, when my phone emitted a strange sound. It wasn’t a message; it wasn’t my usual alarm—it was an earthquake alert. Seconds later, the ground erupted into a brutal fury. Amid the panic, with time stretching into an eternity, my only instinct was to run downstairs to find my parents. Today, with my heart in my hands, I can only thank God for protecting us and for the fact that my family is safe, even though the pain for my country’s victims still weighs heavily on our hearts.
After seven days of anguish, confinement, and the lingering fear of aftershocks, yesterday, July 1, I decided it was time to go out. I needed to clear my mind, breathe fresh air, and realize that life goes on. When I returned, seeking a mental refuge to quiet so many unanswered questions, I sat down to watch the FIFA World Cup match between Belgium and Senegal. And what a blessed balm soccer is when you need to forget the world for a while.
Seattle witnessed a wild match
The match, played at the imposing Seattle Stadium, was a perfect reflection of what I needed in my head: a whirlwind of emotions that would let me completely disconnect. What looked like an imminent elimination or defeat for the Europeans turned into one of the most heart-stopping and epic comebacks of the entire tournament.
Senegal took the field with a flawless game plan, shattering the Belgian team’s composure in the first half. In the 24th minute, Habib Diarra opened the scoring for the African squad. The drama for the “Red Devils” intensified in the second half when Ismaïla Sarr scored a devastating 2-0 goal in the 51st minute that seemed to completely dash Belgium’s hopes.
A last-minute miracle and the drama of extra time
With the clock ticking down to the 85th minute and frustration setting in among the Belgians, the giant Romelu Lukaku appeared to pull one back and ignite a glimmer of hope. Just three minutes later, in the 89th minute, total madness erupted when Youri Tielemans fired a precise shot that tied the game at an unthinkable 2-2, sending the match straight into extra time before the astonished eyes of the entire world.
Extra time kept the tension at an absolute fever pitch. Just when it seemed that a penalty shootout would decide the fate of both teams, in the very last breath of extra time (120'+5'), a penalty kick was awarded to the Europeans. Once again, Youri Tielemans shouldered the enormous responsibility and, with surgical composure, sent the ball into the back of the net to seal the definitive and historic 3-2 victory.
The Power of a Soccer Ball
Watching these 22 athletes give their all for their countries right up to the very last second made me reflect on why I love this sport so much. Soccer isn’t going to rebuild the structures that have collapsed in my country, nor will it erase the deep sorrow of the affected families, but it has the unique ability to give us a moment of respite. Yesterday, as the ball rolled in Seattle and last-minute goals came one after another, I felt once again that pure emotion that fear had stolen from me a week ago.
Belgium secured a historic victory, but for me, the real triumph of the night was regaining ninety minutes of peace of mind. We’re still standing, grateful for every second of life spent with my loved ones and ready to move forward.
