Hi, everyone! Today I’m sharing a new tutorial for a crop top with a gathered detail at the bust. I have to be honest—I had a specific plan and designs in mind for this top, but due to a miscalculation, it turned out to be a different style. It just goes to show that in sewing, you can overcome challenges with patience and the right techniques.

The materials I used are: Sofía Lycra fabric, thread, a sewing machine, scissors, pins, and cardstock for the pattern, which I traced from a top I like, modifying it slightly to remove the sleeves and adjust the shoulder line—which is the real reason I wanted to make it. I have a front piece, a complete back piece, and the four “sleeve” pieces.

First, I hemmed the front at the chest area, then, using pins, I attached the “sleeves” to the top, just as you would sew bias tape around the armhole up to the shoulder. I then joined it to the back piece, which I also hemmed at the neckline.

Once the two large pieces are joined together, pin the sides together and sew a straight seam followed by an overlock or zigzag stitch. Next, hem the edge of the top and the back armhole. Finally, trim off any excess threads and fabric, then gather the fabric by hand at the center of the chest to create a heart-shaped silhouette.
