The Leadership Paradox: Infinite Tools, Zero Guidance
We often look at leadership as a job title, a position at the top of an organization. There’s a persistent myth that once you reach a certain level, you're supposed to have all the answers. The reality is often the complete opposite. True, being a leader has its benefits, but it also has its struggles. Often, being a leader means profound isolation.
In my last conversation with Aljona, she talked about how a lot of leaders are completely alone with all their struggles. They are stuck "somewhere on this top," surrounded by expectations from everywhere, yet they have no real guidance and no safe spaces to grow. Granted, some might want it that way, and that is something that might come with the responsibility, but it is not necessarily good.
Aljona and I have gone through these situations ourselves. Yes, there are a lot of resources and tools today to help leaders live a balanced life; nevertheless, leaders often don't have the guidance or somebody who can support them. Tools teach us the "what," but they can't offer the relational or human support needed to navigate the pressure of the "how," process struggles, or apply these new skills.
The core message is simple but profound: everyone needs guidance and help. We all need safe spaces where we can be open about our challenges without fear of judgment. True growth cannot happen in a vacuum. If we lack a support system, we damage our teams, but also ourselves.
I leave you with one reflection question: where do you find your safe space for balance and growth?
