The Lucky Ones

As I was browsing the internet while the rain brought by tropical storm Nalgae rages outside, I saw a post shared by a friend. I usually don’t pay attention to shared posts but this one caught mine.

Sad Dog.jpg
Source: Public FB Post

They say, a picture paints a thousand words. Picture above did exactly that. It even brought a deluge of emotions. Sadness, anger, helplessness, pity, and most of all- hope.

I could only imagine how that dog must be feeling during that moment. But seeing that picture highlighting the great contrast of their (dogs’) separate lives reminded me of my own two dogs. I immediately saw their bright and happy faces. All my memories of them are about happy events and places. They’re the lucky ones.

Here let me introduce them to you.

Dante The Dog.jpg
Meet Dante. He's 5 y/o now. Though big, he's very sweet. The gentle giant of the house.

Dusty The Dog.jpg
Call me Dusty! Don't be fooled by my size. I may be small and cute, but I'm the BIG boss. 👑

It's probably the reason why this FB picture caught my attention. I'm fully aware that there are suffering animals out there. Animals facing hardships daily and wishing for better days to come. I wish I could do more to help them. The moment I saw the photo, I immediately wanted to go and be at the place where that picture was taken. Take the poor dog away and carry the dog home with me. But that’s impossible and just my wishful thinking.

I felt sad and helpless because I could do nothing to comfort that skinny dog. I was mad as well because I'm capable of so much compassion and love for our pets but at the same time, I'm capable of abandoning others in need too. That's what the picture made me realize.

I see stray cats and dogs everyday. In fact, we have at least 5 stray cats that come and go to our house.

This one is so sweet 🍫 but loves to bite! Toothless

Scar Face The Alpha.jpg
Scarface. Quite scary 😱 at first, but he's got great personality. The Alpha of the neighborhood.

I just let them be and treat them like normal house pets. Whenever they’re around our home, they would find food, a safe place, and some warmth from our family. Which I think is the reason why they always come back to us. This made me feel hopeful. Even though I could not help that dog in the picture, it brought me consolation and peace realizing that I am already helping those animals in need- in my own little way.

I shared this post today because I wanted to convey my thoughts about these unlucky strays. I think they too deserve our attention- not disdain nor hate. They're not asking that much- some food... and little compassion.

To you my dear friends out there, fellow pet owners, I hope that you will extend your love not just to your pets but to those pets which were abandoned, the not so lucky ones as well.

That’s what the picture above perfectly captured. Strays do desire some love and warmth from their fellow animals. More so, from us.

Keep growing,
