Ellie's suspicions of Joel grow when he tells her the fireflies couldn't make a cure, and they knew other kids just like Ellie, who were immune. Joel took Ellie from the fireflies, killed them, and told Ellie there were other immune people and the fireflies couldn't make a cure.
