Early Omicron data in the States.
New CDC report on the first US Omicron cases. As of December 8th, we have had 43 known Omicron cases in 22 states.
Earliest case was November 15th with international travel history. Only 14 of the 43 cases had international travel history, so it is safe to say we have community transmission.
34 of the cases had completed the primary series of a vaccine. 14 had received a booster dose as well, but 5 of them had received the booster fewer than 2 weeks before symptom onset.
6 of the 43 had a history of prior infection.
8 were unvaccinated.
1 hospitalization (in a vaccinated person) and 0 deaths.
4 cases in children. 25 of the cases were in 18-39 year olds. 10 cases aged 40-64. Only 4 cases in 65+.
I wouldn't generalize off of these findings. 43 is quite a small sample. Only 4 cases in the elderly. And only 8 unvaccinated. So very little information on how this virus is in the high-risk and unprotected.
The 22 states are all over the US. I would assume Omicron is in every state by now. However genomic surveillance indicates Delta is 99.9+% of cases in the US as of December 4th. So Omicron is still at low levels here.
