Hiking Through Life: 5 Realizations from the Mountains
Once you start hiking, it can be addicting.
We might have different reasons why we keep coming back. Some hike for the thrill and adventure, some are out there looking for peace of mind, some for therapy, some out of hobby, but whatever your reason might be, I’m sure that the mountains have taught you a lesson or two, and these are a few things I have picked up on the trail.
🌿Every Pain has a Reward
Hiking can be physically & mentally exhausting, but with every aching muscle, every breathless climb—it all leads you to a reward when you reach the top. The summit view, the serenity of nature, and the pride in your effort remind me that struggles in life will always pave the way to something worthwhile. If you are going through a phase in life full of pain and difficulty, just keep going; rest if you must, but never stop; you’re almost at the summit.
🌿 Be Grounded & Stay Humble
As you stand on the mountaintop, surrounded by endless skies and vast horizons, you will come to realize how small you are compared to the grand scheme of things. The mountains will humble you; you can’t be all high and mighty here; we are but a speck of dust in the universe, and yet we are all part of something extraordinary.
🌿 Life is a Mental Battle
It is not the terrain nor the steep incline that will test you the most—it is your mind, that small voice that says, “You can’t go any further.” It’s all our personal anxiety and worries that are the biggest opponent. Hiking taught me that life too is a constant battle between doubt and determination. It will always be you against you.
🌿 Strangers are friends you haven’t met yet
I have met the friendliest people on the trail; everyone is just warm and welcoming. From the hiking community down to the locals. They will cheer for you, share food, and exchange stories; the camaraderie is overflowing. It’s a reminder that there are a lot of good people out there and that we should not judge somebody that easily. You might go on a hike alone but come down with a newfound friend. And lastly,
🌿 God is the Greatest Engineer
The perfection you see in the mountain, the intricacy in every towering tree and flowing water, and the way the ecosystem works will truly remind you that there is a greater God, a genius who carefully created and designed all of this. There is a lot of magic happening in the mountains, and it didn’t just happen in a blink of an eye; nature’s design is flawless and marvelous.
How about you? What life lessons and realizations did hiking teach you?
