In Judging People, Do You Choose to be Right or Kind

In life I have come to notice that judging people is something we all do, either we accept it or not. Sometimes we see somebody action, or the way they dress, or even the words they say, and our mind will quickly put judgement. The question is, when that time come, do we choose to be right or do we choose to be kind?

I remember one story that happen some years ago. There was this boy in our street, people always call him lazy and stubborn. He was not going to school regularly, he use to sit by the junction and just play draft with older men. Many neighbors judged him, they say he will end up useless. Me too, I used to think same. One day I saw him carrying block at a building site, looking very tired. I wanted to mock him that time, to say “I told you, lazy boy.” But something just hold my mouth, and I only said “well done.” Later he told me his father was very sick and he was the one hustling to buy medicine. That day I felt ashamed inside me. I realize I was too quick to judge him by what I see outside.

Sometimes being right is good, but it does not heal people. You may be correct in your judgement, but saying it without kindness can break someone more. On the other hand, choosing kindness may look weak, but it can give somebody small hope to stand again.

In my own life, I now try to balance it. I still judge people sometimes in my mind, I am human, but I ask myself, is it better to be right here or to be kind? Many times kindness win. Because at the end, everybody is fighting battle we don’t know.

So for me, I choose to be kind first. Right can wait, but kindness can heal immediately. The world already full of too much judgement, what people need most is a little mercy.
