Battling with the Waves at Lapus-Lapus Island, Malapascua

Hello everyone!

Welcome to another freediving video! It's a video where we had a very difficult time in the vicinity of Lapus-Lapus Island in Malapascua. This was taken last February and this was our first freedive after Super Typhoon Odette. Our sanctuary in Moalboal was decimated, so we went to the north of Cebu. I'm amazed by the health of the corals surrounding Malapascua.

I now understood why the area has so much stronger current compared to the rest of the island even just on a normal day. The name of the island, Lapus-Lapus, is a Bisaya term that means to go through, perforate, or come out to the other side. This is because the island is separated by a narrow channel where the waves and currents are much stronger. In Bisaya term, the seawater will just "lapus" or pass through the channel and come out to the other side.

We were a little bit crazy for pushing to freedive on that area, but the corals are much more awesome there. Because of the current, there were also a lot of fish species as food is abundant. It was much more tiring, but it was all worth it!
