Celebrating Pi Day

This is a brilliant week, this week, what with St. Patrick's Day coming up (and remember, everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day) and, of course, today being Pi Day! Yes, it is March 14, or 03/14, or 3.14, which equals Pi Day.

Remember back in high school, learning trigonometry, and trying to figure out just what pi was all about? It's all about the circles, really. Euclidean geometry ftw, right??

Seriously, we cannot get away from circles, no matter where we turn. Perhaps it's the traditional clock:

Now, I know, many of us today have these new-fangled digital watches that come in all shapes and sizes but, obviously, I have a proper round one on my wall.

Where else might we look for circles?

Tires! There's one that won't change shape until our cars begin to fly.

And sewer covers! Of all varieties! These are also likely not going to change shapes anytime soon.

The school that my children go to celebrate Pi Day every year by forcing the fourth grade students to memorise Pi to as many digits as they can, and they then have a competition to see who can memorise the most digits. Pi, of course, is an irrational number; it never ends, much like arguing with a fool (which is where it got the term 'irrational', I'm sure). I'll admit, those fourth grade students can memorise pi to many more digits than I can. I can easily get to 10. In a pinch, though, just saying "22/7" will work too, and often confuse a great number of people.

But there's really no better way to celebrate Pi Day than with Pi, of course; a good, round, circular Pie.
