Sweep

Does a chimney sweep ever actually go up on the roof, or more to the point, did they ever? I only know ones who clean the chimney from below, via the fireplace or an opening in the flue.

It's almost the 5th of December again, which is Present Evening, at least in the Netherlands. Three weeks earlier, Sinterklaas arrives and as Gemini just told me, it has become a controversial holiday. Of course, it's all about racism and discrimination, and naturally, everyone is allowed to complain about it, only not the Dutchman, because then he's a racist. A shame, then, if the only holiday we have left can't be celebrated.

It is interesting that the culture and norms and values of everyone must count, but not ours. Why is it that everyone is so keen to come to the Netherlands while they have a burning hatred for the country and its customs? Sorry, but if I come to your country, I also have to adapt, and when it comes to celebrations, you are free not to take part. Just stay at home and do your own thing. That's what I do too when I'm abroad and don't feel like participating in something I don't agree with.

We could learn a lot from each other's customs and history if we didn't constantly go around shouting 'racism'. Let's be honest, that is certainly not something exclusive to white people; on the contrary. People look down on their fellow man all the time, especially if he thinks differently, behaves differently, or looks different. For convenience's sake, that is often swept under the carpet.
