Keeping it Clean - Whimsical Wisconsin

Invasive species are a problem all over - both on land and in the water.

As beautiful as this seaweed forest is, it doesn't seem to be a natural weed.

Looking further, I think this is Eurasian Watermilfoil which is obviously growing unchecked. Fortunately, help is at hand.

This strange vessel is an aquatic plant harvester. 300-400 loads of seaweed are pulled out of the Sturgeon Bay area every year, according to aquarius-systems.com. That would be impressive if the waterway was clear all year around... but considering it's ice covered for two-three months per year, it's even more impressive!

How did this plant get here?
Apparently, it was introduced to the USA about 70 years ago when it was being used in the aquarium trade. Since then, it's been moving north and west... First appearing in Wisconsin in 1962. In addition to irresponsible aquarium keeping, it travels from lake to lake on boats that have little pieces of plant on them as they are moved from place to place. Now, it's in over 650 lakes in Wisconsin and is costly to remove and keep at bay.

This plant harvester has a five-year contract to remove watermilfoil from Sturgeon Bay - as well as an annual permit to apply herbicide to the invasive weed.

It's clear the war is far from won regarding Eurasian Watermilfoil, but they're doing a great job of fighting it.
