Portugal's Biggest Opponent Might Be Its Own Fan Base

Just about a week ago, the FIFA World Cup began, and obviously everyone is excited, including the players, fans, and nations—excited for an opportunity to play at the most prestigious football tournament and watch their teams and countries participate and probably win the competition. Since the competition began, we've had lots of talking points, from the number of red cards given in this year's competition already going beyond that of the previous one to the numbers of goals shooting up and even dissatisfaction between fans, teammates, and the like.

The major aspect I want to talk about today is regarding the situation of the Portuguese team, which obviously is packed with lots of talent and players that are in their prime. They were obviously among the favorites to win the competition, and I agree with that judgment; however, the draw against DR Congo has raised lots of eyebrows and outcries amongst fans, players, and the like. Obviously prior to Portugal playing, Argentina had played, and Messi, who's in the same box, had Ronaldo score a hat trick, making Messi fans banter with Ronaldo, and Ronaldo fans were hoping he'd replicate the same but in reverse, which was the case.

Since then, we've seen Joan Neves probably put off backlash and made a statement that Ronaldo is just like every other player on the team and should contribute like others, although he recognizes Ronaldo's impact on their nation, but the actual statement has made lots of fans worldwide bonkers on him, going after him with derogatory words, even going as far as saying terrible things to his girlfriend, who had to block her comment section because of the terrible messages she was getting. Surprisingly, Bruno Fernandes also gets the same energy in his comments section, as Ronaldo fans keep telling him and Neves to pass to Ronaldo at every given opportunity.

Because they believe they weren't passing to Ronaldo, and that's why he isn't scoring. To be honest, even though I'm a Messi fan and I enjoyed this entire drama going on on the Portuguese team, I must say they have to put their difference aside and work towards the success of the team. Yes, we know Ronaldo will get the vast majority of the credit if Portugal wins the tournament, even if his contribution to winning was minimal, but then no one would take the credit off other players who won it alongside him.

And to Ronaldo fans, I'd love to say even though I enjoyed how angry they are at the moment, I must enjoy them being calm and learn to handle the same energy and banter they've dished out to Messi and us, his fans, for years prior to when Argentina started winning tournament upon tournament. I can vividly remember how Messi was ridiculed and criticized by every media house out there, and now all of a sudden, they can't handle the same troll they used to throw at Messi and his fans.

In all honesty I wish Portugal all the best, and Ronaldo can also win the World Cup. I know they will make it seem as though the GOAT debate is even once again, but then I know my GOAT, and I know his impact on the field can't be quantified by just him winning the World Cup; the stats are there for anyone to see. So in a nutshell, hopefully there'll be peace in the Portuguese team camp, and the fans will learn to respect all players, so the unity fans about success for the team.
