The Lost Son: A Story of Ambition and Destruction

The neighbourhood can be prone to destruction. In most cases, the occupants can bring discomfort, disaster and disarray to the community, most especially the youths who are eager to get wealth. So many youths nowadays are no longer schooling, they join one gang or the other in other to show their ego.

In my neighbourhood a first-year student (name withheld) joined the Eiye (a word in the local Yoruba language for bird), a secret, illegal student society in Nigeria.

They always hold their meeting at night in the forest. The older members will be singing, dancing and drinking, forming a ring around and other blindfolded initiates, beating them severely until the early hours of the morning. Whosoever that joins the cult can never be the same again. This boy that I'm about to unfold his behavior happened to be the only male child of his parents. Infact, you can't believe that he had joined this deadly cult.

The parents of the boy loved him so much than the female children. He wrote JAMB and passed excellently. He wrote Post UTME and passed excellently to study Medicine and Surgery in a reputable university. He was admitted into the university, on getting to the campus, he was lured into the Aiye cult. Someone informed his parents about where he saw him and the calibre of people he mingled himself with. His parents took offence and abused the man, telling him to mind his business and watch his children and leave their son alone. The boy continued in that way till he was doomed.

One day, in the evening, this first-year student went to a Suyaman and forcefully ate the man’s Suya, the man and the buyer of the Suya was angry at his attitude, the boy was so aggressive that night, he beat the Suyaman and the buyer. So, the Black Axe leader saw it and cautioned him, he was provoked, not knowing that he was targeting the man, he later noticed where the man went to drink, he ganged up against the Black Axe leader, cornered him and killed him. Everywhere scattered. People ran helter scalter. Before the man finally died, he ran and took some water in a bowl and drink. Their opponents were very happy to have killed their leader. They all ran away for more than four months. They later came back one by one into the community. Some months later, the boy was celebrating his girl friend's birthday, all their gangs were there including some Black Axe members who were monitoring and giving their members information until they arrived the scene. Immediately their opponents saw them, they ran away, even, his bodyguards ran for their dear lives.

Meanwhile, the master of the day "the Eiye leader" was drunk, he was caught in the party. Remember, he was nominated as the leader of Eiye immediately he killed the Black Axe leader. So, he was captured and taken to a very tight corner, he was shut, the bullet didn't penetrate, he was pleading for forgiveness, nowhere to forgive. He later stamped his feet to fly, he couldn't. He was brutally injured with axe, his legs and alms were totally condemned. This thing happened on Sunday evening, nobody went out to rescue him.
He was very wild and brutish when he was with his gang. He maimed, raped and stole a lot of things in the community. It came to a point that he and his gang was mounting road block, people couldn’t pass without paying a ransom. If one doesn't have money to pay, they will collect phone and that is the end of that phone. The most painful thing was that the parents of the so-called Eiye leader, to some extent contributed to the predicament of their son. They lost their son. They lost respect in the community. They lost money. In fact, they lost everything by not showing example as parents.

In a nutshell, parents should visit their children in school from time to time, to know their friends and their lifestyle so that they won't labor in vain.

Proverbs 13:24 says "He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes." Nevertheless, parents should teach their children and wards, the word of God so as not to fall astray during temptation.

More so, we can see in this true life story that, instead of the boy to bury his parents, his parents buried him in return, with pain and regret. This is a great lesson for us. This shall not be our portion in Jesus mighty name Amen. Thanks for reading. Remain blessed. Amen.
