There is no English word for "sloot" which basically is a small canal dug for either transport or in most cases, for dry making of the land. There are no rivers north of Amsterdam, but most of the province is north of Amsterdam, but all the waters are either man made or remnants of the large inland sea. There are no brooks, rivers or springs here, just canals, lakes and a lot of "sloot".
