Scientific exchange between the Karpinsky Institute of Russia and the Institute of Geology and Paleontology of Cuba

During the 28th and 29th of this month of March, a group of Russian researchers from the Karpinsky Institute of the Russian Federation visited the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, which is also the Geological Survey of Cuba, where I work as Director of Knowledge Management.

Last year they visited our institution for the first time and, on that occasion, elements of interest for both scientific institutions were addressed and an international collaboration project was signed related to the updating of the Metallogenic Map of the Republic of Cuba, to evaluate the potential of mineral resources of the country and to outline the strategies for prospecting and marketing them.

International collaboration project

When the researchers from the Slavic giant arrived at our center and explained everything they had accomplished since their visit in June 2024 we could not believe that in such a short time such important facts had been achieved.

After the usual exchanges and the necessary protocol, we went on to evaluate the fulfillment of the elements agreed upon at the working meeting in June.

The main objective of that meeting was to update the country's database and mineral areas. Unlike previous years and times, it was not necessary for the Russian specialists to be in the field; that activity would be carried out by our researchers and we would send the information and data to the Russian specialists so that with the use of new computer technologies they could create that first version of the update of the metallogenic map of Cuba.

Well, our researchers were in the field and compiled all the information that was provided to the Russian research team and to our surprise they brought us the first version of the metallogenic map of Cuba, which must now be revised by our specialists in mineral resources and cartography.

In addition to this objective, the Russian specialists aimed to evaluate issues related to the use of Sherpa technology in the area of Geological Cartography, which is one of the main areas of our research center, since we are in charge of making maps of different topics.

And the other was to address elements related to new concepts used by researchers in the search and exploration of mineral resources.

In this sense, they gave a conference entitled “Information technologies in regional subsurface geological exploration”. In this conference they explained the importance of technology in the capture of geological data, the speed with which information is obtained and its accuracy, which saves time, humanizes the work and guarantees greater efficiency in the work.

A final comment

These were two days of intense work, in which experienced and younger researchers worked for the common goal of developing Geology, for the mutual benefit of both nations.
