Starring Kate Winslet

This week, CineTV has asked people to write something about Kate Winslet. I’m like, Kate Winslet? Who? (No, not Doctor Who!). So, I looked her up on IMDB and low and behold, I have heard of some of the films Kate was in, and have even seen one of them (not Titanic!). The film featuring Kate Winslet is Sense and Sensibility, adapted from the Jane Austen novel of the same name. And we have it in our video library!

It has been awhile since The Bonnie Bride and I have watched Sense and Sensibility, and had forgotten nearly everything about it, so watching it was a good way to spend an evening after work.

Kate Winslet turned in a magnificent performance as the middle Dashwood sister, Marianne. As she was still early in her film career, Sense and Sensibility predating the making of Titanic by a few years, she proved her self to be quite capable of performing period pieces, as this film is set around the time of the beginning of the English Regency period in England.

Actually, the whole cast was darn good, and included the late Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon, a marvelous performer who handled a wide range of characters, but this is about Kate Winslet, not Rickman. But I can still mention him, right?

After watching Winslet again, and refreshing my memory of her, I noticed that she was also in Kenneth Branagh’s production of Hamlet (trailer on IMDB). This intrigued me enough to want to see more of Winslet’s performances as just about any film Branagh makes is likely to be solid gold.

So, Kate Winslet has performed two period films that can be very challenging to do well, and if her performance as Ophelia turns out to be half as good as her performance as Marianne
Dashwood (betting it will be better), the Bonnie Bride and I will be in for a real treat when we get to watch it.
