I am the butterfly
Blue wings flapping in vain
Caught in the intricately beautiful web,
Spun by a beautifully cunning spider.
I am the terror-stricken sailor
Caught in the amusing Bermuda,
Going around in circles,
Caught in an eternal loop.
I am that lost child
That innocent suffering child
Looking for his mother in the market square
But Èsù* of the crossroads twists the maze,
The paths to the market leads
To the path that goes home,
Only to arrive again at the crossroads.
I am that boy
trapped
In the web of life.
*Èsù is the trickster deity in the Yoruba pantheon. He is believed to be the spirit of the crossroads, markets and other gatherings where he's likely to carry out his trickery.
