We are often sold peace of mind as a state of complete stillness, an image of a crystal-clear lake where nothing moves. We tend to believe that being well means having an organized schedule, a partner who loves us, perfect children, a spotless house, and a silent mind. But let's be honest: life rarely resembles a calm lake; most of the time, life is a turbulent river, and there's nothing wrong with that.
We have fallen into the trap of thinking that if we feel anxiety, chaos, or exhaustion, it is because we are doing something wrong. We seek a picture-perfect calm, and when we fail to achieve it, we add an extra layer of frustration as we navigate the chaos that already exists. For me, true peace is not the absence of noise, but the ability to stay centered while the world spins at full speed. We must accept that there will be messy stages, where dishes pile up or priorities get mixed up, and perhaps that is the first step in stopping fighting with reality.

There is a raw beauty in the moments when we don't have all the answers. It is in the messiness that we often learn about our resilience. You don't need to wait for everything to calm down or be perfect to enjoy your life; you can find flashes of joy right in the middle of the knot. If we can't control the tide, we need to create or establish anchors, which don't have to be big three-hour rituals; they are small points of return that tell you: Here I am, I am safe. My favorite anchors are:
The anchor of ritual: That first cup of coffee or tea in silence, without looking at your cell phone, after waking up.
The anchor of the body: Five minutes of stretching or a short walk at the end of the day.
The anchor of gratitude: Write down one thing (just one) that went well today, no matter how small.
Remember: If you feel a little lost today amid deadlines and noise, keep in mind that you don't need to be perfect to be at peace. You just need to be kind to yourself as you navigate.
