Should On The Job Training Interns Be Paid?
Warm greetings community and learners ππ.
I understand an intern to be a person being training under a certain job or profession, or someone who is still learning and being supervised by someone who knows the job very well.
Internship starts after graduation from the university and for the purpose of practical knowledge, a graduates π goes for a certain period of time though this internship before he or she starts on the job search. The University Board calls this program Internship while the Polytechnic that runs the ND and HND programs , calls it Industrial Training (IT) which always seemed very important and most times compulsory.
Why Interns Should Be Paid.
In my own opinion , interns should still be seen as a student π©βπ who is still learning, although out of the four walls of the class room, but now in an organization, wanting to perfect on what they have been taught through the years of studies in a practical form, so must need some financial assistance even while they are been on the job training and being supervised.
Most interns who applied for internship in companies and organizations are mostly being accepted because even while they are learning from their supervisors, they most times help the organizations to do other minor jobs which is out of the main area of their training. And again, most interns while on this job training spends more money π΄ transporting themselves to the office, through the week and through the months the internship has been scheduled for. So the company or the organization needs to at least help them financially.
With experience from and during my own days of internship, the organizations only pay π° some little amount of money to the interns to support them with transportation and maybe lunch, if the organization does not have a company cafeteria. And I see this as something worth doing as it helps and enables an intern to focus and pay proper attention to the job learning due to how many who do not have parents or guardians to support them through this period may suffer lapses of all kinds.
Although, some companies may shy away from accepting graduates π for internships because of paying them, but their is nothing like supporting a graduate π©βπ who just finished a five (5) year career with so much struggle and all kinds of stress. I feel that if payment of a kind is involved, an intern will pay more attention, which in turn can lead to him or her doing so well at the end of the internship and giving him or her an opportunity to be employed in his or her place of internship.
Supporting interns on the job is what I see as a necessity especially in countries where the government are not paying attention with any kind of grants to the students and citizens. The parents bearing the burden of training their children from 0 age to youth age, and continues to support their children even when some will graduate π©βπ and will not have any earning job for years. Internship is a learning program but many interns ends up help companies with many other jobs not related to what they came to learn.
