Quarantine Quilt

Hey Hivers. I'm taking a break from travel blogging today to share some art with you. During quarantine, I made a quilt! For those of you unfamiliar with quilting (I've found it's not very well-known in Europe), it's a medium that uses old or small (extra) scraps of cloth sewed together to make a larger design, which is usually eventually formed into a blanket.

I had some scraps and ready-to-retire clothes that formed a harmonious color scheme of pinks and golds, and so I decided to get started. Here you can see some of the squares laid out as I was still working on them individually and starting to decide on the overall assembly:

The larger square in the middle is a special piece. It's from a tapestry that my Mom bought in Pakistan in the 1970s. She gave it to me a long time ago and I eventually made it into a pillow case which I used and treasured for a lot of years. Originally it was dark red, green, and yellow, but then one time instead of hand-washing it, I got careless and put it in the washing machine on the gentle cycle. When it came out it was all pinks and purples! I was so upset, I was like, this was an heirloom and I've ruined it! But then on closer inspection I realized I really liked the new colors. :)

I spent a lot of hours working on this quilt during quarantine. I listened to massive audiobooks during the process, and those stories feel sewed into the squares in a way. So do a lot of other memories. Most of the pieces were from clothes of mine that I wore for many years, so it feels very personal. So personal in fact that I'm not sure if I'm even going to sell it.

I haven't fully decided yet. Maybe I'll keep it in case I have a daughter someday. For now, I'm just enjoying having it on the wall in my room.
