Galeón Andalucía

I suppose one benefit of not posting in a while is having a little backlog of things I can post about.

Back in half term (end of May/beginning of June), we had a visit from the rather magnificent Galeon Andalucia. One Saturday morning youngest daughter and I decided to go check hour out. We weren't disappointed.

The Galion Adalucia is a replica of a 16th - 17th century galleon and the only sailing example in the world. She was ready to sail in 2009 and between 2010 and 2013 covered 35,000 nautical miles.

The below was the view from the Forecastle.

She weighs 500 tonnes, with an overall length of 160 feet and beam of 32 ft (the measurement at the widest point). During the visit we were able to mooch about various decks including the gun deck which did indeed have guns (well canons). She has a sail area of just under 1000 sq/m (3 masts).

The below is in the Noble Area and a replica of the Admiral Room. The Noble Area also had a couple of cabins and rest rooms. Only fancy people would have been allowed in this area back in the day.

You couldn't help but feel a little Jack Sparrow around here. There's something quite mystical about a vessel of this type and I can't quite get my head around people circumnavigating the globe on such a ship.

If you've got deep pockets you can pay to sail on her between ports as she tours various locations. I think it was around 400 Euros to sail on her to Holland from the Norfolk coast.
