El otro día, mientras disfrutaba de una tranquila comida en un restaurante, tuve un encuentro cercano con un comensal bastante peculiar que decidió unirse a mi mesa. No era una mosca común, sino un insecto de un vibrante color verde que inmediatamente captó mi atención.

Mi curiosidad pudo más, y después de investigar un poco, pude identificar a mi nuevo "amigo".

🔍 Conociendo a la Chinche Verde

Resulta que se trata de una chinche verde, muy probablemente del género Nezara (familia Pentatomidae). Aquí les dejo sus datos de identificación:

• 🎨 Coloración: Un verde brillante muy llamativo. Me comentaron que en invierno algunas pueden volverse marrones

• 👃 Mecanismo de Defensa: ¡Cuidado con molestarla! Popularmente se las llama "chinches hediondas" (stink bugs), porque cuando se sienten amenazadas liberan una sustancia con un olor muy fuerte
• 🍽️ Dieta: Son insectos fitófagos, lo que significa que se alimentan chupando la savia de plantas, frutas y hortalizas

Es muy probable que la especie específica sea Nezara viridula, la "chinche verde del sur", común en América y Europa.

The other day, while enjoying a quiet meal at a restaurant, I had a close encounter with a rather peculiar diner who decided to join my table. It wasn't your common fly, but a vibrant green insect that immediately caught my attention.

My curiosity got the better of me, and after some research (and with help from an expert!), I was able to identify my new "friend."

🔍 Getting to Know the Green Stink Bug

It turns out this is a green stink bug, most likely from the Nezara genus (family Pentatomidae). Here are its identifying characteristics:

• 🏹 Body Shape: That classic shield-shaped body
• 🎨 Coloration: A very striking bright green. I was told some can turn brownish in winter
• 📍 Distinctive Details: If you look closely at the photo, you can see small reddish angles on the edges of its thorax (the pronotum)
• 👃 Defense Mechanism: Be careful not to bother it! They're commonly called "stink bugs" because when threatened, they release a strongly odorous substance
• 🍽️ Diet: They are phytophagous insects, meaning they feed by sucking sap from plants, fruits, and vegetables

The specific species is most likely Nezara viridula, the "southern green stink bug," common in both the Americas and Europe.
