Nvidia Revokes GeForce Driver License For Use In Data Centres

Nvidia is done with data centres using its GeForce and Titan graphics cards. Not when they should be using the enterprise-grade Quadro and Tesla cards instead. As such, the company has revoked the GeForce driver license from data centres.

What this means is that data centres cannot download and install drivers for GeForce graphic cards, essentially preventing them from using the GPUs. A problem seeing that many data centres have adopted the Titan X as a suitable low-cost replacement for Quadro graphics cards.

Japanese data centre Sakura Internet has apparently become the first casualty for this policy change. The company has informed customers that it is no longer offering dedicated servers based on the Pascal and Maxwell architecture.

That said, Nvidia is still allowing data centres to use the GeForce cards for blockchain processing. Likely because doing so tends to reduce the lifespan of the GPUs, requiring them to be replaced more often.

Needless to say that this will have an impact on data centres that have already invested heavily in Nvidia GeForce cards. They will likely have to get with the programme and pick up Quadro products to continue operating; or jump ship to AMD.
