The Roland D-70 is a 76-key digital synthesizer released in 1990. While branded as a "Super LA" successor to the famous D-50, it actually functions more like a high-end sample-based ROMpler. It is highly regarded for its lush, cinematic pads and its powerful resonant filters, which were later used in the iconic JD-800.
The synth features a 30-voice polyphony and is 6-part multi-timbral. One of its standout physical features is the set of four assignable faders on the left side, allowing for real-time manipulation of parameters like filter cutoff, resonance, and attack. It also includes two PCM card slots for expanding its sound library with U-110 series cards.
When buying a vintage D-70 today, you should be aware of the "red glue" issue common in Roland keyboards from this era, where the weights under the keys can become loose or cause a sticky mess. Many users now opt for the Roland Cloud version to get the classic sounds without the maintenance of 30-year-old hardware.
