Trip to Port Townsend

Today we decided to do something different. Instead of staying on Whidbey Island, we decided to take a ferry to Port Townsend. The Coupville to Port Townsend ferry terminal is about fifteen minutes away from us.

As we arrived to the ferry terminal we got a couple adult ferry walk on tickets and our daughter was free as children under eighteen are free. After about thirty five minutes of sailing we have arrived at Port Townsend.

We have walked around downtown Townsend and it surprisingly had a lot of retail stores. These days we have seen a lot of retail stores close up in downtown Seattle and San Diego, so it is interesting to see a much smaller town have a very active retail downtown area.

Port Townsend was founded in 1851 after being named in 1792 by Captain George Vancouver. Investors built ornate brick buildings and Victorian mansions believing it would become the "New York City of the West"

It became known as the "City of Dreams." Unfortunately it didn't workout as railway system was not connected to Port Townsend.

After it became apparent that there will not be a railroad to Port Townsend the local economy crashed. Since there were no money for development a positive side effect was that it left its grand Victorian architecture preserved as a historic coastal treasure.

After above five hours of walking and admiring the Victorian architecture we were very tired and had a nice dinner of a burger with fries, pasta and three appetizers one of which I really liked which was home made buckwheat chips and smoked salmon dip.

We also shared a salad and some other appetizer. I also had an Old-fashioned which was less than half the price we are used to in Seattle area at only twelve dollars.

On the way back we saw a large cruise ship leaving the Puget Sound... It was a great day trip!
