This Morning's Milky Way

It's Milky Way season around here! The Milky Way has been rising above the horizon at night, and the conditions all lined up for some photography fun.

The alarm clock went off at 2 am, and I headed to the spot I was originally planning on going to. But the wind... the very strong wind made me change my mind once I go there. My Milky Way exposures are usually about 20 seconds long. Wind and long exposures don't mix well, the wind shakes the camera on the tripod and you end up with a blurry photo. Yes, I know this from experience...

I went to a second location, but strike two!!! That place was even windier. So I headed back home. But on my way, I decided to pull over and check out the shoreline of Donner Lake, to see how it was looking. Very little wind! I found an interesting composition and set up the gear. Third time was the charm! I was happy with this shot and really, it might have even been better than what I originally had in mind, lol.

Shot with the Canon 5DS R and a 16-35mm lens, set at 16mm. The ISO was 1600, the lens aperture was f/2.8, and yes, it was a 20 second long exposure. A tripod and shutter release cable were used. No lens filters or flash. Oh, I did use my headlamp to light up the foreground and dock a touch.

No selfie photo this time but I did shoot a little video. Hopefully I'll have that worked on soon.
