Time Lapse Video - PLEIN AIR PAINTING in Paradise, New Zealand

This is a speeded up video of me painting a mountain landscape, outdoors in Paradise, New Zealand. I paint outdoors a lot, I love being outside in the fresh air and painting from life and I have found that painting outdoors has really improved my studio work and my painting skills overall. I have had many lightbulb moments from painting outdoors.

When I paint outdoors I often use the paintings as colour studies for more detailed studio paintings.

Painting outdoors in known as painting 'en plein air', a French term meaning to paint outside.

In this video I painted the view of Mt Chaos and the Dart River that meanders through the mountain valley. I am painting with oils on an 8" x 10" canvas panel.

Whilst my studio paintings are detailed my plein air painting is much more loose gestural, a style that painting outdoors lends itself so well.
