Three Tune Tuesday : Going Kinks!

For this week's share for #threetunetuesday, as inspired by @ablaze, I went with an old favorite band of mine. The Kinks. The Davies brothers...this group is easily a top five favorite band for me. I actually prefer them over the Stones, which I guess is heresy to some, but hey, whatever. The fact that most Americans had no idea who they really were as a band aside from their early hits likely made me like them that much more. Oh, the days of Napster...it used to give me such a head's up on bands like this.

For this week, I thought I'd share three mid-1960's songs from the quartet. So with that said...

The Kinks : Set Me Free

This is where the Kinks started to mix their early, protopunk guitar sound with their quintessential English melodies. It's a quick 2:21 underrated gem from the 1960's. I know FM radio never played it back in the day, but this one was a Napster find. Hey, thanks Napster!

Another B-side gem that never heard the day of radio over here in Wisconsin...yet I found this through diligent research and book reading in the days before the Internet. Yeah, I'm that old.

I always loved the lyrics to this song; the sparse accompaniment works well too. It's fun to hear them let the bass lead the song, rather than those punk, chainsaw guitars.

The final track to their wonderful 1966 album Face to Face. You don't really hear this song much in context to the group, either. I have no idea why. It's a loud, thundering track with a driving bass line and drum line. The overlay of the Kinks' guitar sound is sparse too; I think it's one of their best riffs, but what do I know? God bless the Queen, and the Kinks, I guess...
