Deusi 2016 at NM Bhawan (Part 3)
Tihar is the festival of lights, also known as Deepawali and Yama Panchak which is a five-day festival celebrated by the Hindus of Nepal. It usually takes place in the month of Kartik (October to November).
Bhailo is played by women whereas Deusi is played by men where groups of people go singing door to door. Such groups are usually offered flowers, fruits, sel roti, money which are kept on a diya-lit thali or nanglo. There is a common belief that if the deusi-bhailo groups become happy, then the Goddess of wealth, Laxmi, will also become happy.
Every Tihar, such chants are heard in every village and town of Nepal. The Deusi-Bhailo tradition has been an inseparable part of the festival.
Here is a video of me with my friends playing Deusi at NM Bhawan, Lagankhel, Nepal.
