We know that in society, the punishment for committing a serious crime can be imprisonment, life imprisonment, or even the death penalty. These tough laws have been created to keep people away from crime. But the reality is that despite such strict laws, people are not stopping committing crimes. There may be various psychological, social, and economic reasons behind this.
Many times, criminals are not afraid of being caught. They think that they can hide the crime. Again poverty, scarcity of work, low incom also increase the tendency to commit crimes. The main purpose of punishment is not only to hurt the criminal but also to keep society safe and give the criminal a chance to reform. But if punishment cannot prevent the repetition of crimes, is there a deficiency in our current justice system? In Bangladesh few organisations are trying to drug rehabilitation. But those are not sufficient. Now a days a large number of crimes are occurring for raising money for drugs.
There is no way to deny that punishment increases fear in people. it is not possible to eradicate crime through only fear. In order to reduce crime, social awareness, good education, and economic security are also needed beide punishment. If people can properly fulfill their basic needs and justice is ensured, crime rates will decrease significantly.
Using this opportunity, we can discuss this complex relationship between crime and punishment in more detail.
We need to understand that prison is not a permanent solution to any problem. If a criminal come out of prison as a more dangerous criminal, then it is time to change our system. To bring about real change, we need to identify and eliminate the root causes of crime. To eliminate crime from society, it is most important to awaken morality and human values in every person.
Without raising consciousness it is not possible to erase crime frm the society. Beside this well education should be confirmed for all especially for the women. A good mother can build a good character of his child. Children generally follow his mother in childhood. Most of the significant quality build up in childhoid by see his mother's activities. So an educated mother much better to guide her children than an uneducated mother.
Finally, it can be said that punishment may temporarily keep people away from crime, but to make a society crime-free, we need to build a humane society along with the rule of law. Let us dream of building a society where the conscience of people will play a more effective role in curbing crime than the fear of punishment. Thinking deeply and discussing this issue is very relevant for the present time. The government should take significant scientific steps to rehabilitation for criminals and decrease crimes from society.
