Pruning the vineyard

It's not quiet spring yet here but I have been trying to take advantage of the warmer days.
During the days when the temperature gets warmer I have been out in the vineyard pruning grapevines.

All of the vines look wild this time of the year, because the sap isn't flowing this is the perfect time to prune.

These 2 are pictures from before I started pruning.

Notice how the new growth on the vines is greater than 2 feet long. Part of the winter pruning is cutting back the new growth and eliminating none productive branches.

Now I take the pruning shears and cut back a few nodes. With this varietal I choose about 6-8 inches above the top wire as my length.

It was difficult to prune and take a picture at the same time. :)

Shoots of the vine that were growing horizontally were trained along the support structure to produce more shoots for fruit production.
