Muslim identity and ummah

Muslim identity is defined by the ways in which a Muslim follows the customs and practices of the religion. To be a Muslim is to believe the Shahadah and to try and live as a practising Muslim.

The word "Islam" means "submission", so a Muslim lives a life in submission to the will of Allah. This idea of submission means that a Muslim must try to live a life which follows the teachings of the Qur'an.

Because Islam is a worldwide faith, Muslims use the term ummah for the worldwide community of Islam. This term means that all Muslims, regardless of where they live in the world, are all members of a worldwide faith.
