Pajaro de mal agüero

The man looked at me like I was an outsider, which I was. But then he looked at my boyfriend sitting right next to me and nodded. Next, he whistled and the ducks hurried to cross the road.

"You know him?" I asked quietly.

"Well, yeah. That's uncle Tim. He doesn't like meeting new people, but this could've been worse" he replied while this man made a turn to get to the other side of the car.

"Did you come for the party or the funeral?" Tim asked with no emotion in his face "'cause if you came for the former, it's canceled"

We simply stared in silence for what seemed like an eternity but couldn't have been more than a few seconds

"What do you mean? Someone died?" my boyfriend asked, stuttering.

"Not just someone. Betsy" Tim said and started to move again. He waved at me when he crossed the road following the direction the ducklings took a mere minutes ago and vanished in the fields.

"I'm sorry, was she close to you?" I asked not knowing how to handle the situation. My anger had disappeared already and I was struck with sadness even though I didn't know the person.

"You could say that. Betsy was my father's favorite cat. I guess we'll have to get clothes for a cat funeral now." he replied with a blank expression on his face.

And I thought this couldn't get any worse...
