Humping matters
Not that it is a serious question, but looks can be deceiving; and in this case, the amount of humps matters!
As you probably already guessed, we're talking about camels... and dromedaries! I visited Egypt recently, and camel rides near the pyramids is one of the tourist traps where you're basically pushed into.
Well, the geek in me has to do the necessary clarification: they should be called dromedary rides, not camel rides! Both species belong to the Camelidae family, but dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) have only one hump on their back, while the camels (Camelus bactrianus) have two! And in Africa and middle east, it's the dromedary we'll find - camels live in Asia.
I'm not really a fan (to put it lightly) of activities that involve animal work for the sake of tourism, but it is the reality here. At least it gives me the oportunity to see them up close... and how cute are they??
They're even awesome in a #monomad challenge! Besides, the usual landscape where we normally see them doesn't have that much colour, so they're a perfect fit.
While we find them with straps most of the time, during one of my travels I was able to spot a group of apparent wild dromedaries! Or at least, they were given the chance to roam around freely, since they were wandering along a rocky desert with no humans nearby.
For what I've learned, there doesn't seem to be wild populations of dromedaries nowadays... but would love to believe this was an exception!
Even the camels dromedaries that were with our group got curious, and decided to stare at me waiting for explanations, that I didn't have.
I love these curious goofy faces, and most of them seem to be quite friendly. Not only the looks are cool, but they're biologically fascinating species, given how well equiped they are to withstand the harsh desert conditions. Mother Nature knows what she's doing! :)
