Shortcut to the Past
I'm rocking in front of the lake in a hippie chik hostel, in a town of Atitlán in Guatemaya.
Two fishermen float near the shore in their canoes. Those are neither hippies nor chic. And no matter how much they wear barcelona fc shirts, they are a shortcut to the past.
The technology of their wooden cayucos and their style of rowing and fishing are ancient.
The cayucos have the particular line of the peoples of this area. Who and when will have decided to mold that particular breakwater bow, who knows.
It is so curious that a whole constellation of peoples have identified with this barge and it is today one of the banners of the Mayan culture on the lake, buoying among the waves made by motorboats with 250hp engines.
It is a gem, and it seems that it goes unnoticed. It's funny. And the fishermen make gestures playing with the line, I see their ancestors in all that gesticulation. Generations and generations. And generations. That they go, they go ... they go with the waves.

Un Atajo al pasado
Estoy hamacándome frente al lago en un hostel hippie chik, en un pueblo de Atitlán en Guatemaya.
Cerca de la orilla flotan dos pescadores en sus cayucos. Esos no son ni hippies ni chic. Y por más que visten camisetas del barcelona fc, son un atajo al pasado.
La tecnología de sus cayucos de madera y su estilo de remar y pescar, son ancestrales.
Los cayucos tienen la línea particular de los pueblos de esta zona. Quién y cuándo habrá decidido amoldarle esa proa rompeolas tan particular, quién sabrá.
Es tan curioso que toda una constelación de pueblos se hayan identificado con esa chalana y sea hoy uno de los estandartes de la cultura maya en el lago, boyando entre las olas que hacen las lanchas con motores de 250hp.
Es una joya, y pareciera que pasa desapercibida. Es graciosa. Y los pescadores hacen ademanes jugando con la línea, yo veo a sus ancestros en toda esa gesticulación. Generaciones y generaciones. Y generaciones. Que se van, se van.. se van con las olas.
