Henry and Liza, a Freewrite

"The pail is empty"

"No shit Henry. There's a hole in it."

"We need to fix that Dear Liza, otherwise we can't get any water back to the string beans."

"What string beans? That crop failed. On account of no water."

"Well, then, back to the tomatoes."

"Squirrels got to all of those."

"Corn?"

"Deer."

"What will we eat then?"

"Fish fry. I know you like fish fry."

"The oil was old that last time. That was a Sunday. Today is Sunday, I don't want to risk it. You know how I look forward to my meals."

"Sigh. I do know. I think you should become a breatharian. Life would be better for both of us."

"I read about that in this book "Living by Nature's Principles." She says plants breathe above ground, and take in nutrition through their roots, and that we should make like the plants. We just have to lie on the bare ground in the rain for thirty minutes a day. On days when it doesn't rain, we can drink water."

"No can do Henry. There's a hole in our bucket."

This is my entry to @mariannewest's daily freewrite challenge. Today's prompt is empty pail. For this, I set my timer for 4:30, started writing, and wrapped it all up when the timer went off. I went back off timer to put in the italics and clean up the punctuation, but made no changes to the content.

I went to find a video of the song "There's a hole in the bucket", and found this fabulous Sesame Street video. I then went back to my story to change the names, which were originally "Sherlock" and "Sharon".

The parallels between my story and this video are uncanny. Rita Moreno's character in the video is exactly who I envisioned as Liza/Sharon while I was writing. And Henry.

The thumbnail is a screen shot from the video. I tried to stop on a moment when Liza looks exasperated.

I almost never know where I'm going to go when I start off on a freewrite, and am often very pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend this activity for embodying your deepest self!
