CATEGORIZING ILLS

Let's say Fulani Herdsmen killed 29 people in a Benue community while Don Wanny a notorious kidnapper together with his men killed 32 people in Omoku, Rivers State. An average Nigerian from the South will be more angry and aggrieved by the 29 killed by Herdsmen rather than the 32 in Omoku because he has been told that these Herdsmen are part of a grand plan to Islamize Nigeria or an attempt at ethnic cleansing.

You see, what we hear, read about and believe seeks to think, make decisions for us and in most instances determine how we interpret and to what intensity we view certain actions and inactions. It also distorts our objectivity. And this is so not good.

I do not seek to probe into whether the allegations against the Fulani community are true or not, but my point exactly is what people have said about a group of people or a religion or anything shouldn't be the ONLY details we look out when giving your verdict.

We must be objective in our reasoning and stop categorizing evil base on who is the offender and the victims. If 10 persons were killed by Herdsmen in Taraba, we shouldn't see it as a greater evil than the 29 that were killed in Offa by arm robbers.

I'm Jay Sun and I believe until we stop categorizing evil base on the offender(s) and the victim(s), we have a long way to go in dealing with societal ills.
