Slugs, Fire Salamander and Dor Beetle Drawn Out by Early Spring Rain


Even though Spring is already in full spring according to the calendar, the weather is still more reminiscent of winter. On a slightly warmer night, we however got some rain and as I went for a walk through the woods after, I saw a whole manner of creepy crawlies whom I haven’t seen for months.

Different types of slugs, including a large Black Slug (Arion ater), an earth-boring dung beetle known as Dor (Geotrupes stercorarius), as well as a Fire Salamander (Salamandra salamandra) all cam out at the same time. More about Fire Salamanders in this video:

I did some macro photography for this video, providing closeups of the animals presented.
