LOH contest 297 : Talking about my emotions isn't easy because I suffer from mental health conditions./ Hablar de mis emociones no es fácil porque padezco problemas de salud mental.
Good afternoon, blog friends. Here I am again, taking part in this wonderful contest. Today, we’re talking about emotions—specifically, the ones I find hardest to describe or discuss. I should start by mentioning that I have a psychiatric diagnosis of anxiety, hypochondria, and depression, so unfortunately, I deal with negative emotions all too often. It took me a long time to recognize the problem and seek help; in fact, I feel these emotions literally consumed me for long periods, and I’m still fighting them today. I really struggled to acknowledge and talk about my feelings. But gradually, thanks to therapy, I’m getting used to opening up about them. Neither anxious nor depressive emotions are easy to share—often because, when you do, people trot out the usual clichés: "Just stop thinking about it," "We all get a bit depressed or anxious sometimes," "Just think positive," and other platitudes that don't help those suffering from mental health conditions. Fortunately, I’ve always had intelligent family and friends who realized I wasn't well and understood the illness. Talking about my thoughts has always been difficult; for one thing, some of them—especially the anxious and hypochondriacal ones—seemed absurd to me. I felt I had to hide my fear of doing practically anything. Even when I had panic attacks, I wouldn't speak about them out of shame, which made me feel even worse. Now, when I have a panic attack, I talk about it; I calmly explain what’s happening—that I’m afraid I’m going to die, have a heart attack or a stroke, or that I can't breathe and my heart is about to explode. By talking about it, I’ve discovered that many people have experienced the same thing, even if less frequently. Unfortunately, I’m currently going through a long spell where, despite treatment, I suffer from almost daily panic attacks. It’s a real nightmare—so much so that I can no longer watch medical dramas or read medical news, as they trigger intense reactions and intrusive thoughts
It’s hard to open up about the feelings of failure I experience; I feel like a disaster—especially now that I’ve been unemployed for two years. I feel like a total failure, a burden to everyone, useless dead weight to society—incapable of doing anything, ugly, stupid, and fat. I used to keep these feelings to myself, but now I open up to my loved ones; they all tell me I have a distorted self-image. But hey—you try convincing my brain that I’m not a total disaster; it’s not easy to find self-esteem when you don’t have any. I also used to stay silent about my sad thoughts; now I do talk about them—though not too much, because they are incredibly depressing: fears about the future, death, and illness, along with intrusive thoughts telling me that life and the world are horrible, that I don’t belong here, and that everything is a nightmare. Unfortunately, my mind is my own worst enemy, and talking about it isn’t always easy—it wasn’t even easy with my therapist. But I am learning to open up about the darker sides of myself, too, because, sadly, they are part of who I am.
