Huge Large Quasar Group
Our galaxy, The Milky Way, is pretty huge. It has recently been discovered that it is between 1.5 and 2 million light years from one end to the other. The thickness ranges depending on how close you are to the center, but it is tens of thousands of light-years across. Let's think about that for a minute. That means that if we were on one end of the Milky Way and saw something happening on the other end, we would be watching something that was happening like from the beginning of man. Scary big right? Well, it's not even close to the largest thing in the universe.
For another reference, with our current knowledge, the maximum size of any cosmic structure in the universe should be only 1.2 billion light years across. This has been the theory since Einstein.
However, as scientists have discovered, and have no idea how such a large structure was formed, there is the Large Quasar Group or LQG. This particular LQG is approximately 4 billion light years across. That's about 20,000 times larger than our Milky Way galaxy. It contains a cluster of 73 quasars and has been given the name of Huge Large Quasar Group or U1.27.
It is possible that this massive LQG could help us better understand how other galaxies, including the Milky Way, were formed. That, in turn, could help us understand how the Earth was formed. That could lead us to understanding us better.
