A New Direction

This morning, instead of turning left to go to the village to buy cigarettes, I walk straight on towards the beach. Today, I am aware of my actions as I do this and I observe myself with some interest and a bit of pride as well.

This is more progress.

It's not forced.

It's not even intentional.

It's a natural decision to do something that I want to because it's a beautiful morning and I have a yearning to see the ocean. I suspect it'll be dead-quiet-deserted down there at this time of day.

I head on down towards the beach, aware that I have the same sensation I used to have at my special place far away in the mountains, where I felt like my authentic self.

I look around me as I walk and see some swallows flying above me. This is one of my favorite birds because of their shape, but even more because of the sound they make. I stop to listen to them now.

I look up and watch them circle above my head against the blue early morning sky. Black and quick. Their distinct shape still clearly visible even though I don't have my glasses on.

I've just this minute realised why I love a particular piece of art so very much...

I stand still on the grassy verge next to the road and watch them, hoping to hear their call. And I do. It sounds like techno. It sounds synthesized. It's the most unusual bird-call I have yet to hear.

I must have been standing there, neck strained back staring up at them, saying "Wow" out loud a few times for more than a few minutes when I suddenly realise what I'm doing.

Moments of immersion again.

But I'm still aware of this, so I guess it's not total immersion.

Yet.

Perhaps that only makes it more special though. I wish I had my phone camera so that I could take footage of them for Hive. But at the same time I'm glad I do not.

I carry on walking towards the beach with anticipation.

This has become a regular activity. A walk along one of what has to be the most beautiful beaches in the Western Cape...

Slowest physical rebuild in the history of all my histories of going too far.

But one step at a time...

one day at a time.
