Learning to live with solar: June 4 2026

Understanding how my solar, inverter, and battery work with our grid connection has been interesting. I thought it would be pretty straightforward for somebody with my level of electrical experience. Of course, as usual, it was a lot more complex than I thought. Sure, all you do is turn it one after the setup register, and it connects online to your home internet, and it pretty much starts working by itself.

Set to self consumption, l have enough panels and battery to be off grid, but still being connected to the grid means I have to pay. When big loads turn on in my house, the grid supply reacts faster than my inverter and battery.
This means I still use some grid power even if I don't need it.

I got this set up, hoping it would reduce my electricity cost and eventually pay for itself. I wonder if it would speed up the break-even point. If I disconnect from the grid completely or sign up for a virtual power plan system where the power company takes control of my battery. I am just not sure I trust some big organisation to charge and drain my battery at market rates.
