Using the earth as a battery.
Using the earth as a battery.
A different approach
Who would have thought, the energy we need has always been available below the Earth, now, for the first time, a company claims to have found a way to transform the interior of our planet into a giant battery capable of storing and releasing clean energy on demand.
Sage Systems announced the raising of $97 million and a series C and B round to build the world's first commercial pressurized geothermal plant with implementation planned in the United States. The proposal is ambitious because it attacks exactly the historical limits of geothermal energy.
For many years the idea of geothermal was seen as an interesting but restricted solution, dependent on very specific locations, high water consumption and high initial costs, it works well, but only where geology helps, Sage Systems wants to change that equation.
Artificial thermal storage.
Instead of depending on natural reservoirs of steam or hot water, the company relies on hot and dry rock formations that are much more abundant under the Earth's crust. The detail is to use not only heat, but also the natural pressure of the earth. The system works like this: water is injected deeply into controlled fractures in the rock called lung fractures. These expand and contract elastically like underground lungs, storing hot water under high pressure.
That energy is stored there, when necessary, the system releases that pressurized water converting heat plus pressure into electricity; The test, according to the company, is a gain of up to 50% more efficiency compared to conventional geothermal systems. In experience, it is not just generation, it is geological energy storage, it is firm, clean, continuous energy, without depending on the sun or the wind.
In conclusion, we have stable energy 24 hours a day, which promises to sustain AI infrastructures, data centers, autonomous fleets and smart cities.
