Since the past couple of months, I have this morning routine of putting some grains for the birds. I put some sesame seeds for them and a bowl of water. The summer is so hot here and I can just imagine how these birds must be surviving. There is a feeding ground just opposite my building, but I see only pigeons over there and I always wonder where the small birds must be going to feed themselves, so as an experiment I started putting the seeds. Sesame seeds are very small, so I assumed it will be easy for the small birds to feed on.

It was a successful attempt, the small birds started coming in to feed, and now they are regular. Morning if I wake up late, they are already there waiting for me to put the food. They keep looking at inside, so I have made it a point now that before I go to sleep, I put some seeds for them so that morning even if I wake up late, they have their food.

My cook says they are my children; that's kind of sweet; I too enjoy watching them, and if I do not see them in morning, I feel a little restless. I cannot identify but I feel they are the same ones returning every day. I keep the sliding door closed because if it's open they fly away, possibly they feel a threat. Today morning I took a video of them; they were so joyful. The pictures do not have great clarity because they are taken through the glass window.

They come 2 to 3 times in a day, so I ensure that their food is always there. When there is no food, they keep waiting there and as soon as I see and open the window they fly away, once I put the food and close the window they come back again for their feed. It's like a hide and seek play.

During Ganesh Chaturthi time, I wanted to grow a small wheat plant to put in the prayer rituals, I had placed the pot with the other plants, and it grew a little, but then these birds came and ate up everything. First, I was annoyed but then I felt maybe they needed some variety so they went for it.

They have become my special guests who if I do not see I feel restless, so kind of what my cook says they are my children, I believe it is true.
