Young Student Discovers How to Kill Superbugs
Superhero Shu Lam, a 25-year-old PhD student in Australia, have discovered a non-antibiotic way to destroy superbugs, the megavillians of micro-organisms. The scientific community and the United Nations view antibiotic-resistant superbugs as threats to global health. Currently, superbugs kill ~700K people a year and are estimated to kill 10 million by 2050. The emergence of a gonorrhea strain that cannot be contained by traditional antibiotics is scary.
I like the fact that she's of Asian descent and a female. Is that racist? The technique deploys the use of a "a star-shaped polymer that can kill six different superbug strains without antibiotics, simply by ripping apart their cell walls."
